Diablo 4: Blizzard announces first major expansion

Blizzard Entertainment announced Diablo 4's first major expansion at BlizzCon 2023, previewing Hateship's arrival with a mysterious new trailer and story details. This new chapter revisits the history of Diablo and features Mephisto, one of the series' sources of evil, and tells a new story after the main campaign of Diablo 4.

Players will visit new areas to defeat Mephisto, and there will also be the introduction of a new class "never seen before in the Diablo world." Here's Blizzard's official description of the upcoming expansion:

Hateship continues the brutal story begun in Diablo IV as you discover the fate of the first evil one, Mephisto, and his evil plans for Sanctuary. To do this, you'll visit a new area in Diablo IV, known to locals as Nahantu. As the campaign story continues, there will be new ways to play, new evils to slay, and all-new classes never seen in the Diablo world. "

Currently, the new expansion is scheduled for release in late 2024, with new details expected to be announced mid-year.

The trailer for the upcoming expansion doesn't reveal much other than highlighting a jungle setting and a menacing, deep, ominous voice (presumably Mephisto). Given Mephisto's importance to Diablo, and especially Diablo 4 (he is Lilith's father, after all), he can be a formidable foe for brave players.

There were probably plenty of other reasons to get us into Diablo 4 before he showed up. The game's second season is currently running, and the upcoming third season will include new challenge dungeons and more. There will also be a new seasonal event taking place during the festival, with the Red Mantle Terror appearing in the mid-winter blight of Broken Peak starting on December 12, 2023.
